Review: Nekromantik (1987)

Mmm Nekromantik. I finally picked this up after spending a great amount of time searching for an official copy. After rewatching it I've decided to review this because I feel like rambling on about this movie even though I know nobody is reading

Nekromantik follows the character of Rob, a man whose job is to sweep up th
e corpses from accidents. Rob usually brings parts of the bodies home as mementos. One day he brings a nice gooey corpse for him and his girlfriend, Betty to have a threesome with. Soon Rob gets fired for having problems with his coworkers and after he brings this disappointing news home to his wife, she takes the corpse and runs away. Rob is left depressed, finding depraved ways to deal with this recent loss while fantasizing of a perfect life in between the flashes of Robs sad reality all leading up to his gruesome demise.

I absolutely love Nekromantik. Shot on super 8, given that dark and grainy look that helps give this film that sweet uncomfortable atmosphere. The corpse looks incredibly realistic, but is fake as said in the commentary, though the organs in the jars around Rob's apartment are real (including the gooey eyeball Rob rolls around
in his mouth during the infamous love scene). It's a gruesome version of a simple story. I haven't seen much that matches the tone of Nekromantik except for Der Todesking, the second film from director Jorg Buttgereit. One main problem I have with this film is the moments put in just to lengthen the film like the rabbit skinning, and the apple picking scene, even though Buttgereit says in the commentary the apple picking scene tells the story behind the corpse that Rob and Betty make love to. But the scene still isn't necessary. Besides that I am in love with Nekromantik.

Overall, It's a great film that either goes under the radar for people or is only looked at as a shock film. I'd rate this at an 8/10.
if you can find this for under $40, pick it up.
