The Nikkatsu Roman Porno Trailer Collection is exactly what it looks and sounds like. It's a compilation of trailers for a number of porno films released by producer Nikkatsu Roman through the 70's and 80's. It's Impulse Picture's answer to Synapse's 42nd Street Forever series.

So to start this off, it's about an hour in total running time. It's a short disc, chock full of various types of trailers, all ranking in entertainment value. Personally I've never gotten into trailer compilations, and after watching this, I still feel the same way about buying compilation discs in general. I prefer to rent them, and write down the names of the titles I am interested in only to check them out later. With this, it seems like this is more for the person who doesn't buy porn anymore (like all of America's youth today); the type of person who has discovered watching the 3 minute preview is a lot better than buying the full program when it comes to porn.

Besides that target audience, the other half of people buying this disc are the ones who love shitty porno's (Like me). With this you get basically all the best parts of these over the top sleaze fests in less than two minutes per movie. Some of the notable moments including: a woman shoving a squid into her vagina only to have it squirt ink on a man, a woman tying a man up accusing him of being gay threatening to shove objects into his ass, and many other degrading but disgustingly humorous things.

One downside to this, that is basically in porn everywhere, is that so much is repetitive. Though we get an ink blaster every now and then, we do get a lot of the same thing over and over again. Too many of these trailers are basically the same love story, with sometimes a comedic or action plot thrown in. With those re-occurring constantly, it gets boring. Though we get that, when pacing gets slow, something happens to catch your eye. Try to make out what is happening in the picture below and I will tell you that this happens more than once in this compilation.

As for extras, there's a short film that looks like it was shot in the late 1990's/early 2000's. It looks atrociously digital (due to the lacking budget of the porn industry today), but besides that, it's pretty much what you would expect from a(n almost full length) film from Nikkatsu Roman. I must say though, especially for the new age, there is optical blurring and other methods of censoring that are just awful, covering up about half of the screen. If you really want to see something hardcore with this disc, you're out of luck.

Overall, if you're like me, and love shitty porno's for the sake of shitty porno's, pick this up. Unlike other trailer compilations, the movies themselves for this will most likely be boring, the trailers on this disc really show the parts that make these types of crazy porno's good. Besides that...um stick with the internet.

Monamour (2005)

  • Widescreen, 1.85:1 aspect ratio
  • Year: 2005

  • Directed by: Tinto Brass
Tinto Brass has made quite a name for himself in Italian cinema. As I said in my previous reviews of his films he's taken great leaps between the different areas of art and exploitation. Towards the 90's his films fell into the crest of mainly being pure erotic pieces. Monamour is the perfect example of the territory in which his films have entered. The film fallows a newly wed woman named Marta. When Marta starts to get bored with her husband, Dario, she begins to write about it in her diary. One day she meets a mysterious man, Leon in a museum, and from there on an affair begins. Now, the film plays out too much like a really badly written Soap Opera extended to 98 minutes with gratuitous sex scenes. While I very much enjoy sex scenes, it doesn't make a movie. Almost the entire third act is one long threesome sex scene. After seeing a lot of Tinto's earlier stuff, I was very much disappointed with this. The artistic side of his films have really started to float away; but then again I haven't seen much of his recent work. Though the film is mainly a softcore porno, not all of the art has disappeared. The film still is shot and lit beautifully.

One scene that seems to stand out is one in a massage parlor (as pictured above) where everything in the frame has a silver, chrome tint. The film is beautifully shot, and one thing I am still confused slightly about is if it really was softcore or not. This is really the first time I've seen someone whip out their erect penis in a softcore film. Though if it were hardcore, I'd imagine cumshots and penetration would follow, given that a lot of the sex did look hilariously simulated (e.g. blowjob at a party early in the film).

The relationships between the characters are half developed int he movie. From the beginning, we don't really like anybody. Marta's constantly whining, keeping to herself expecting Dario to know what's missing in their sex life, expecting him to read her mind. Dario is an ignorant prick, judging by when she says that she was raped to try to catch his attention, he acts like he doesn't give a damn. As for Leon, we barely see him. I get the sense that maybe Leon was supposed to be a badass, but when he ends up showing up an hour late for a date with Marta, we get the sense he too is an asshole. The only character remotely interesting is the sex addicted friend of Marta; now why couldn't we see a movie about her?

Overall, Monamour is not a good movie. If you're looking for a diverse film like Tinto's earlier work, look elsewhere. This is the laziest effort of Tinto Brass. I still look forward to more of Tinto's work though this was a bit disappointing. The trailer for kick the cock caught my interest, the look of the clips shown on the Cult Epics website alone has me ready to give it watch. Anyway, 4/10, if you're interested in Monamour, pick it up at CultEpics.com.

Site Update

I've been lazy, I haven't written jack shit since November, but more will come, many movies will be reviewed (I am almost through The Fernando Arrabal Collection Vol. 2, which has been sitting on my shelf for a few weeks and was planning on reviewing, but medical problems came ashore and made sure that things would be postponed) anyway soon things will be back to normal and all 5 people who read this will be happy

Review: Begotten (1990)

Begotten is a film that I can't really explain why I love. It's the first film from E. Elias Merhige who directed Shadow of the Vampire which is another film I greatly appreciate. So here I'm going to give the best synopsis of this film I can. Spoiler alert, but trust me, no matter how I explain, this movie will have the same effect upon first watching.

The movie starts out with God sitting in a cabin, mutilating himself with razor. Soon to come out from behind God who is now sitting dead in his own blood, is Mother Earth who goes on to take gods semen and impregnate herself. She then gives birth to Son of Earth who goes on to get beaten and then tortured by cannibals on earth. This then leads to the killing of Son of Earth and Mother Earth whom are then planted into the ground where the cycle of life starts all over again.

I can't describe my love for this film. The imagery in it is something I have never seen before. Shot in black and white, and filtered in post, the movie looks like a photograph from the 1800's. The image on the movies poster looks like an old ghost photo you'd find on castleofspirits.com. Another thing that I really admire about this film is how reminiscent of a nightmare it is. This film is just like a dream. Apparently the film was inspired by a near death experience E. Elias Merhige had which makes me want to watch this again with that in mind.

Overall, Begotten is one of the strangest films I have ever seen, one of the most interesting films I have ever seen, and one of the best films I have ever seen. It's an interesting look at a myth of earths creation that I couldn't take my eyes off of. Overall I give it a 9/10. It's currently out of print, if you can get your hands on a bootleg, I would strongly recommend giving it a watch.
